Making Money on Amazon KDP in 2024: My 100 Books Challenge

Are you curious about how to make money on Amazon KDP in 2024? I’m on a mission to find out. Today, I’m starting a series where I’ll be sharing my journey with Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). My goal? Publish 100 books, and see how much I can make using different types of content. So, let’s dive in—I’ll break down why I think this year will be a big one for me (and you) on KDP.

Why KDP?

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already heard about the opportunities on KDP. It’s one of the easiest ways to publish books and start making passive income online. I’ll be real though—I haven’t made a crazy amount of money from it yet. But the potential is there. That’s why this year, I’m really buckling down and planning to increase my numbers and improve my strategy.

I’ve always loved creating things, and KDP is the perfect creative outlet. But I’ve learned that making money from it isn’t just about throwing out random ideas. You need to balance creativity with knowing what the market actually wants. While it’s a numbers game, you also need to target the right audience.

Finding the Balance: Creativity vs. Market Research

For me, there’s a personal sweet spot between being creative and doing solid market research. You could spend hours trying to find what people are buying—doing keyword research, and finding niches—but if you aren’t actually excited about the projects you’re working on, you’ll lose steam fast. My approach this year is combining that research with my creative intuition.

I know, traditional advice says market research is everything. And yes, I’ll still look at what’s trending and take it seriously. But what’s the point if I hate the projects I’m creating? I need to enjoy the process, so I’m making sure I’m working on projects that align with my interests.

Here’s where my head’s at: I’m pushing out 100 books this year. But I’m thinking of experimenting with different types of content. That could mean exploring more low-content books, like journals, planners, or sketchbooks. But I’ll also try creating medium content books for more of a challenge.

Setting Goals Without Limits

This part is hard to admit, but I hesitated to set big income goals for myself in the past. I would always think small—hoping just to cover a bill, or maybe get my car repaired. I don’t know why, but I felt like I couldn’t aim any higher.

Something shifted for me this year, though. I realized I was putting limits on myself when I didn’t need to. God can do much more than I could ever ask or think, so why not dream bigger? I’ve set small goals like paying off my car, sure. But I won’t stop myself from asking for more success.

Even if I fail to hit those big numbers, pushing for more than I think is possible can only open up new opportunities. I challenge you to think the same way. What goal have you been afraid to reach for?

My Method: Composition Books and Medium Content

If you’re familiar with KDP, you know it’s common for people to publish low-content books like composition notebooks. They’re simple to create, require less planning, and the barrier to entry is low. But, I’ve heard many people say that this market is oversaturated—and they’re right. It’s tough to stand out when so many people are doing the same thing.

That said, I have a little twist in my head when it comes to these books. I’m still exploring the idea, but I want to try something slightly different. I’ll be testing out this twist with the goal of understanding whether composition notebooks can still be profitable with the right strategy. You’ll get updates on that soon.

Additionally, I’m planning to dive into more medium-content books. These are books where you put in a bit more effort—maybe a guided journal, workbooks, or even a short story collection. I’m hoping that blending these two types of content will give me the mix I need to make consistent income.

Playing It Smart: Keeping the Details Private

One thing I’ve learned while being on KDP is that you have to protect your work. This space is competitive. Unfortunately, if you show too much—like book covers or exact titles—it’s easy for people to copy what’s working for you. That’s why I won’t be sharing every little detail about my books. But don’t worry—I’ll guide you on the process without risking the originality of my own projects.

It’s all about being smart in how you share and where you put your energy. I’ll still be transparent, taking you along the path from research, creation, and publishing, but the specifics like covers will stay under wraps.

Conclusion: Follow the Journey

This is the beginning of my 100 Books Challenge for 2024 on Amazon KDP, and I’m excited to see where it goes. My approach is simple—create a balance between creativity and market research, while pushing myself to think bigger financially. Whether you’re looking to start publishing on KDP or have been doing it for years, I hope this inspires you to take some risks, aim high, and follow your own path.

It’s going to be a wild ride, and I want you to come along with me. So let’s see where this experiment takes us. Maybe you’ll learn something new, or maybe you’ll be convinced to try KDP yourself.

And if you’ve been playing it safe, ask yourself—why limit your potential?
